X Application Server System

XASS is a system for creating application servers for the X Window System. Clients can query servers or broadcast, and applications are run on the servers but displayed on the client's display. Applications are launched as the user who ran them, making XASS superb for heterogenous, distributed, loadbalanced systems.

0.50 released

28 November 2002

This release includes significant bugfixes and security enhancements, as well as failure fallback, prioritisation, true load balancing, some switches, and better reporting. Servers can be configured to not offer when under load or when too many instances of a user/group/application are running; names are used instead of numbers, and applnk directory trees can be shared dynamically. Again, you can download the release, view the CVS, and comments are encouraged.

0.42 released

29 October 2002

This release incorporates syslogging, ability to daemonise properly, port configurability, application arguments support, and argument/environment substitution. That, combined with general bug fixes, and a new troubleshooting guide, headline this new release. As always, comments are welcome and encouraged. All files are in the CVS repository. Download it here.

0.50 roadmap

29 October 2002

With the release of 0.42, it's time to consider the future. At present, 0.50 is planned to break compatibility by sending usernames and groupnames rather than UIDs/GIDs. 0.60 is supposed to incorporate some form of GUI admin module. But we need your feedback. How should User/uid blocking work when usernames, not uids, are the basis for communication? Should uid blocking be dropped? And what toolkit to use for the gui? Athena (portability/compatibility), QT, GTK, Java, KDE, Gnome...it's up to you! Speak now, or forever hold your peace...

0.41 released

22 October 2002

New features and fixes signify time for a new release. This should add more flexibility, portability and less problems to XASS. As always, comments are welcome and encouraged. All files are in the CVS repository. Download it here.
